Most of what you buy online, you never see chosen. A listing goes up, a warehouse ships it, and nobody who sold it to you ever held it in their hands. We wanted Art Deco Crystals to work differently from the start — so once a month, we drive 250 miles to Donghai, and we choose every stone ourselves.
Here's what that actually looks like.
Why Donghai
Donghai, in China's Jiangsu province, is one of the largest natural crystal and stone trading hubs in the world. Workshops, cutters, carvers, and wholesalers cluster in the same area, which means in a single trip we can walk from raw material to finished carving without ever losing sight of where a piece came from.
That matters more than it might sound like. A stone that passes through three or four unnamed middlemen before it reaches a shop is a stone nobody can really vouch for. A stone we select ourselves, in person, from people we've bought from before, is one we can stand behind completely.
What we're actually looking for
We're not buying by the box. Every trip, we go piece by piece — picking up rough picture jasper to check its banding and color before it's ever carved, examining bracelet strands for natural variation instead of artificial uniformity, and setting aside anything that looks overly saturated, overly perfect, or just off.
It's slower than ordering from a catalog. It's also the only way we know what's actually coming home with us.
From raw stone to finished piece
For our picture jasper carvings, the process starts with rough stone — often unassuming, dusty, easy to overlook if you don't know what you're looking at. The carvers we work with have done this for years, and watching a rough piece of banded jasper become a koala or a dragon, with the stone's natural pattern worked into the design rather than carved over it, is honestly still our favorite part of the trip.
For bracelets, it's a different kind of attention: checking that color comes from the stone itself, not a dye bath, and that each strand is strung to hold up to daily wear.
Why this became the whole business
Neither of us set out to do this. I was in finance. Carla was building a career in cosmetics. We met at a tech company in 2021, and somewhere between then and the end of 2025, it became clear that the thing we actually wanted to spend our time on was this — something real, something we could trust completely because we'd chosen it ourselves. By early 2026, with the generous partnership of our friend Anlinta Yu, that turned into a small physical space in Nanjing alongside the shop.
We don't think of what we sell as just inventory. Every piece that makes it into Art Deco Crystals passed through our hands first, because that's the only way we know how to do this.
Quick answers
Where does Art Deco Crystals source its stones?
We source primarily from Donghai, China, one of the world's major natural stone and crystal trading hubs, traveling there in person roughly once a month.
Do you select every piece individually?
Yes. Every carving and bracelet is hand-selected before it's listed — we don't purchase sight-unseen from wholesale catalogs.
Is buying crystals sourced from China trustworthy?
It depends on the seller, not the country. China is a legitimate and major source of natural crystal and stone. The risk comes from sellers who buy in bulk without verifying material; hand-selection and in-person sourcing are what make a shop's stones trustworthy.
Who runs Art Deco Crystals?
Art Deco Crystals is run by Zee and Carla, who left careers in finance and cosmetics in 2025 to source and sell natural stone full-time.
